Thanksgiving Mantel Decor: 13 Simple Ideas, With a TV or Without
Thanksgiving mantel decor ideas for every fireplace: leaf garlands, pumpkins, candlesticks, neutral schemes and mantels with a TV above, plus what to keep when the fall mantel turns into the Christmas one.

In this guide · 20 sections
Thanksgiving mantel decor needs four things: an anchor on the wall, a base of leaves or greenery along the shelf, pumpkins in two or three sizes, and candles. If you decorated for fall in September, you already own most of it. Take away anything that says Halloween, add candles and a few white or muted pumpkins, and the mantel is ready for the fourth Thursday of November.
Below are 13 ideas: classic, neutral, candle-only, with a TV above the fireplace, and with the hearth doing half the work. A last section shows what to keep on the shelf when Christmas starts the following week.
From a Fall Mantel to a Thanksgiving Mantel
| Keep | Take away | Add |
|---|---|---|
| Leaf or eucalyptus garland | Bats, spiders, black and purple pieces | Taper or pillar candles |
| Orange and white pumpkins | Carved pumpkins | A few muted pumpkins: sage, cream, tan |
| Wreath, mirror or art above | Novelty signs | Dried grasses, wheat, branches in a vase |
| Lanterns and baskets | Fake cobwebs | A plaid or knitted throw on the hearth |
The Thanksgiving version is the calmer one: fewer novelty pieces, more candlelight, and colors that sit well beside a dinner table.
Classic Thanksgiving Mantel Decor Ideas
1A eucalyptus and berry garland with white pumpkins
Lay a garland of eucalyptus and orange berries along the whole shelf and let both ends hang down the sides of the surround. Stand white and tan pumpkins on top, with three or four amber glass candle holders grouped at one end. A round mirror above reflects the candlelight. Dried orange slices tucked into the garland add color for the cost of one orange.
2A basket of pumpkins tipped on its side
Lay a shallow basket on its side at one end of the mantel and let small pumpkins and gourds spill out of it with a few leaves. At the other end, stand a vase of maple branches and three wooden candlesticks. Repeat the idea on the hearth: a basket with a plaid throw and pumpkins, a copper pot of pine cones and two lanterns.

3A leaf garland, a twig wreath and one lantern
This is the mantel in the photo at the top of the page: a faux maple leaf garland with warm micro lights along a rough wood beam, a twig wreath with a burlap bow on the wall, two pillar candles on wooden holders at one end and a lantern, a jug of branches and a pumpkin at the other. It is the most traditional look, and every piece is easy to find second-hand; our thrift store fall decor guide lists what to look for.
4Pumpkins on the hearth, candles on the shelf
Put the bulk on the floor. Group large pumpkins in gray-green, orange and white on both sides of the firebox with pillar candles between them, and keep the mantel itself to a leaf garland, a row of small candles and two candelabras. A leaf wreath above ties the two levels together. Heavy pumpkins are safer on the hearth than on a narrow shelf anyway.
Neutral and Candle-Only Mantels
5White pumpkins, sage and dried grasses
For a room that is not orange: a garland of sage-green leaves, white berries and pampas grass, with white, cream and pale green pumpkins nestled into it, and tall taper candles in wood and brass holders. A vase of white dried branches at one end and a stack of old books at the other give height. It suits white and beige rooms, and most of it can stay through winter.
6Every candlestick in the house
Gather brass candlesticks of different heights at one end of the mantel, six or seven of them, with cream tapers. Add a dark vase of branches behind and one small white pumpkin. That is the whole display. It is the cheapest idea here if you already own the candlesticks, and the easiest to turn into Christmas: swap the pumpkin for a sprig of pine.

7Wheat and dried flowers
Bundles of dried wheat tied with twine, standing in jugs or laid flat along the shelf, say harvest without a single pumpkin. Add dried hydrangea or strawflowers and a few brown glass bottles. Keep dried material well away from any flame.
Thanksgiving Mantel Decor With a TV
A TV above the fireplace takes the place of the wreath or mirror, so the decoration has to stay low in the middle and build up at the ends.
8Frame the screen with candles and a wreath above
If there is wall above the TV, hang a leaf wreath there. On the mantel, put a cluster of candlesticks and a short piece of leaf garland at each end, and leave the middle bare under the screen. Pumpkins and candles on the hearth balance the dark rectangle from below.
9Swag the garland below the shelf
Hang a leaf garland in two swags from the front edge of the mantel, so it decorates the surround instead of the shelf. A pumpkin at each end is all the top needs, and nothing rises in front of the screen. Fix the garland with removable hooks on the underside of the shelf.

10One tall arrangement at one end
Make the mantel asymmetric: a tall vase of pampas grass, dried flowers and eucalyptus at one end, where it rises beside the TV rather than in front of it, three pumpkins at its foot and a leaf garland trailing along the shelf to the other end. Baskets and a plant on the floor on the same side keep the weight together.
11Use the hearth and the shelves beside it
When the TV fills the wall, decorate around the fireplace instead. Stand corn stalks or wheat sheaves on both sides of the firebox with potted chrysanthemums in front, keep the mantel to a low line of mini pumpkins and berries, and put a pair of baskets with dried wheat at the ends.

Simple and DIY Thanksgiving Mantel Ideas
12A thankful garland
Cut leaf shapes from kraft or colored paper, have each person in the house write one thing they are thankful for, and clip the leaves to twine across the mantel. It costs a sheet of paper and gives guests something to read while dinner finishes. Hang it from the shelf edge, well below any candles.
13Five things from the garden and the kitchen
A mantel with nothing bought: branches of colored leaves in a jug, pine cones in a bowl, apples or pears in a row, a few squashes from the kitchen, and whatever candles you own. Fruit and squash can be eaten afterward.
No fireplace? A console, a sideboard or a shelf takes the same four layers. The dining table follows the same colors: our guide to hosting Thanksgiving in a small apartment covers the table and the seating, and our Friendsgiving decor ideas cover low centerpieces that leave room for dishes.
What Stays When the Mantel Turns to Christmas
Thanksgiving and the start of the Christmas season are days apart, so plan the change now:
- Stay: candlesticks and tapers, lanterns, the mirror, baskets, white pumpkins for a week or two, eucalyptus and plain greenery.
- Go: orange leaves, orange pumpkins, wheat and corn stalks.
- Come in: an evergreen garland in place of the leaf one, ribbon, baubles in the baskets, stockings.
Our Christmas mantel decor ideas pick up from exactly this point, including mantels with a TV.

FAQ
How do you decorate a mantel for Thanksgiving?
Start with an anchor on the wall, a wreath, mirror or art. Lay a garland of leaves or eucalyptus along the shelf, add pumpkins in two or three sizes, and finish with candles at one or both ends.
How do you decorate a mantel for Thanksgiving with a TV above it?
Keep the middle of the shelf low or empty, put height at the ends, and use the hearth for larger pieces. A garland swagged from the front edge decorates the fireplace without blocking the screen.
What is a simple Thanksgiving mantel on a budget?
A row of candlesticks you already own, one jug of branches from outside and three small pumpkins. Add a paper thankful garland if you want something handmade.
What colors work for a Thanksgiving mantel?
Orange, rust, gold and brown are the classic ones. White, cream and sage green make a neutral version that also carries into winter.
When should I change from fall decor to Thanksgiving decor?
Right after Halloween. Remove the Halloween pieces and carved pumpkins, and add candles, muted pumpkins and dried grasses for November.
Can I leave pumpkins on the mantel until Christmas?
White and pale pumpkins can stay for a week or two beside evergreen. Check real pumpkins often: in a warm room above a fireplace they soften sooner than outdoors.
