You can hang Christmas decorations without nails by letting the door, the window frame and your furniture do the holding: over-door hangers for wreaths, clear adhesive clips for garland and lights, tension rods in window frames, and weighted holders for stockings. Mounting putty handles cards and paper decor.

The right method depends on two things: what you're hanging and what surface it goes on. Below is how to handle each decoration, which method suits which surface, and how to take everything down in January without losing paint (or your deposit). For decorating ideas beyond the hanging part, see our small apartment Christmas decor ideas.

How to Hang a Wreath Without Nails

On a door: an over-the-door wreath hanger is the simplest option. It hooks over the top of the door with no tools. Check that the door still closes; thin metal hangers usually do, but some weatherstripped front doors are tight.

With ribbon: loop a long ribbon through the wreath, run it over the top of the door and secure the ends on the inside with a strong adhesive hook or tape. The ribbon becomes part of the look.

On a wall: use an adhesive hook rated above the wreath's weight. Weigh the wreath on a kitchen or bathroom scale first; fresh wreaths are heavier than they look.

On a window: a suction hook on clean glass holds a light wreath, and it looks good from both sides.

How to Hang Garland Without Nails

  • Along a wall or doorway: clear adhesive decorating clips every 30–45 cm hold the garland without showing.
  • Across a window: fit a tension rod inside the frame and wrap the garland around it.
  • On a banister or railing: twist ties, gear ties or ribbon bows hold it in place and come off in seconds.
  • On shelves and mantels: drape it and weigh the ends down with candleholders or small objects. A weighted holder at each end stops it sliding.

Garland is heavy when it's thick and real. Faux garland or a lighter eucalyptus-style strand is easier on adhesive clips.

How to Hang Christmas Lights Without Nails

  • Around a window: clear adhesive light clips along the trim, or suction clips on the glass itself.
  • Across a wall: clear decorating clips spaced evenly, keeping the plug end close to an outlet.
  • As a curtain of light: hang curtain lights from a tension rod inside a window frame.
  • Without any wall at all: wrap lights around a branch in a vase, a ladder or a small tree. Our small Christmas tree ideas include a wall tree made entirely of lights and clips.

If you have no ceiling light in the room, warm string lights can do double duty; see more in lighting an apartment without ceiling lights.

How to Hang Stockings Without a Mantel

  • Weighted stocking holders sit on a shelf, dresser or windowsill. Put them on something that won't tip.
  • Over-door hooks on the back of a door hold two or three stockings.
  • A leaning ladder gives each stocking its own rung and doubles as decor.
  • A curtain rod or tension rod in a window holds a row of stockings on ribbon loops.

Cards, Ornaments and Paper Decor

Mounting putty holds cards, paper stars and light ornaments on painted walls. Washi tape works on most painted surfaces for paper decor. For a card display, run a string or twine between two adhesive hooks and clip cards on with mini pegs.

How to Take It All Down Without Damage

  1. Adhesive strips: hold the hook, then pull the strip's tab slowly straight down along the wall, stretching it 30 cm or more. Never pull it toward you.
  2. Putty: roll a fresh ball of putty over leftover bits to lift them off.
  3. Suction cups: lift the edge to break the seal rather than pulling.
  4. Tape marks: a hair dryer on low softens most residue before you peel.

Practical Takeaway

Wreaths go on doors, garland and lights go on clear clips or tension rods, stockings go on weighted holders, and paper goes on putty. Prep every surface, respect the weight limits and remove strips by stretching them down, and your walls will look the same in January.

FAQ

How can I hang a wreath without nails?

Use an over-the-door wreath hanger, loop a ribbon over the top of the door, stick an adhesive hook rated for the wreath's weight, or use a suction hook on glass.

Do Command hooks damage walls?

They're designed to remove cleanly when you pull the tab slowly straight down. Damage is more likely on fresh paint, wallpaper, textured walls and when strips are pulled outward.

How do you hang garland on a wall without nails?

Space clear adhesive clips every 30–45 cm along the wall or doorway, or drape it over a shelf or curtain rod.

Can you hang Christmas lights on a window without nails?

Yes. Use suction clips on clean glass, adhesive light clips on smooth trim, or a tension rod inside the frame for curtain lights.

How do you hang stockings without a mantel?

Weighted stocking holders on a shelf or dresser, hooks over a door, a leaning ladder or a curtain rod all work.
